Masters Of The Martial Arts

Several years ago, under my former Sensei, our dojo and most of the other martial arts studios in the area participated in a demonstration titled The Masters Of The Martial Arts. It was a great demo and a wonderful way to let the community know that martial arts in this area are very much alive and give people an idea of what we are truly about. The last time we did this we sold out the entire auditorium of Canon City High School for two shows!

Last month I spoke with Professor Neal Tyler, the owner and Chief Instructor for Nova Defense here in Canon City. Not only is Mr. Tyler a knowledgeable and qualified teacher, he is also the Canon City Police Department’s D.A.R.E. officer. I initially went to visit Mr. Tyler in regard to the tournament he was supposed to sponser in May. While I was there I learned that the D.A.R.E program here in Canon City was in jeopardy. It seems that a lot of the funding has ran low for this program which is directed toward our youth and makes an effort to keep them drug and alcohol free. We discussed another Masters Of The Martial Arts demo to help the program.

I was scheduled to attend an initial meeting on the fourth of this month along with the heads of the other martial arts schools in the area. Due to responsibilities at the dojo, I was unable to attend. However Mr Tyler was gracious enough to send me an e-mail with many of the details that were discussed at the meeting. Here is some of the pertinent information concerning the demo.

The Martial Arts School owners discussed the details of the martial arts event and the following items were addressed.
1. Location: Neal has been in contact with the CCHS with tentative dates of 8/21 or 28 after some discussion it was decided that we would ask if that date could be moved to 9/11 or 9/18. Neal will check on the availability of those dates.
2. Our time line is from 6:00 -9:00 with each school having 30 minutes and the last 30 minutes will be for a combined demonstration of all schools.
3. Each school will prepare a 20-minute demonstration fitting of their school and style. The reason for the 20-minute demo is to allow 10 minute clean up and set up between schools during this time we will have drawing for various items we will have donated. The logistics will be worked out as we have the next few meetings.

This is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our style and show the community the true meaning of karate. I plan for us to begin organizing our part of the demo very soon
